At Nottingham Academy our curriculum provides a wide range of opportunities to help our pupils acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in all aspects of their education including the humanities and linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technical, social, physical and artistic learning.
It is important to us that our curriculum is thoughtfully put together and it is structured appropriately. Lessons are sequenced in a way that is right for our pupils and supports learning and development for all our pupils.
It is paramount to us that our curriculum is broad, and captivating and we have designed it with three goals in mind:
To give pupils appropriate experiences to develop as confident, responsible citizens who connect with their future possibilities
To provide a rich ‘cultural capital’
To provide a coherent, progressive and structured curriculum that enables all pupils to learn, develop and experience success
Successful learning occurs when learners have ownership of their learning, when they understand the goals they are aiming for, when crucially the are motivates and have the skills to achieve success. Our daily teaching techniques promote this way of learning and help give our pupils increased self-esteem, greater independence and ultimately high achievement.
This is the background knowledge of the world our pupils need to infer meaning from what they read, promoting reading continuously is our key feature. Cultural Capital includes vocabulary which, in turn, helps pupils to express themselves in a sophisticated, mature way.
Phonics and Reading in year
In Key Stage 1 phonics is taught daily and in addition to our other reading and literacy learning we follow the letters and sounds programme. This programme introduces our children to new phonemes in phases and allows them to practise their segmenting and blending for reading. Children’s reading books are matched to their current phonics level as well as their interests.

We have identified both whole school adventure-based themes, these will remain and evolve further for 2019/20, and our continuous provision aspects, these are non-negotiable. Aspects within the intra-curriculum and other cross-curricular aspects have been mapped out so we have clear structure.
