UNICEF Rights Respecting Autumn Term Update

Back in September each class voted for their new Rights Respecting Ambassador for the year ahead.

We started with a welcome meeting to get to know each other a little better and introduce themselves to the school through the RR display boards where you can find out why they think they were chosen for the role.

The RR ambassadors have had a busy and eventful start to their journey. First on the agenda was to discuss our ongoing community project with the food bank and how we will continue to support this in school...more on that later. Next was to think about how this group of new ambassadors wanted to make a difference with their own project for the year.

It didn’t take long to realise that there was one common theme dominating conversation – sustainability within our school. The ambassadors are very passionate about improving the recycling systems in school, food waste and reducing the plastic usage. To help us begin this journey Mr Jones has spoken to the adults in school who can help. We also have a speaker from the WE Schools charity organisation coming in January to speak to the older children on how they can move this project forward in school.... watch this space.

WE Schools is a charity that helps support and empower young school leaders and we were invited to attend their first WE Schools Day to held outside of London, in Nottingham. Ambassadors from Years 4-6 attended the event with me at the Royal Concert Hall. A host of inspirational young people and celebrity guest speakers spoke to us about how as young leaders in schools we can make a change. Key themes were - Mental Health, Innovators, Environment, Community, Global issues. We were treated to music form Bluey Robinson and guest speakers Vicky Mclure, Joe Dempsie, Bella Ramsey, Pudsey Bear and Emilio Estevez.

WE Schools have been really impressed with our commitment to the community charity project we set up with the Food Bank last year. Our school is now one of the main donators to the St. Anns and Sneinton Food Bank and last week we were invited along to help sort and pack family parcels for Christmas. While we were there the children were filmed by the BBC for a documentary that will be aired in late January....more details to follow.

On behalf of the Food Bank and the RR Ambassadors we would like to thank you for all your support and generous donations. If you would like to donate food, hygiene products or clothes you can do so by placing the items in the collection bins which can be found by reception on both sites all year round. Thanks again.
