Vision for Careers and Employability Skills

“A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on it’s own wings. Always believe in yourself” – Unknown

Equipping children with the knowledge, skills and attributes to be successful after school.

Our children are self-assured, confident and optimistic about their futures. They are willing to take calculated risks and are able to call upon themselves and their support network to deal appropriately with set backs, disappointment and challenges. Our children’s future career aspirations are encouraged and broadened because of exposure to frequent, repeated, high-quality information from a wide variety of sources and delivered in different ways, including the embedded school ethos, curriculum lessons and delivery by external partners.

Our children are familiar with Higher Education and employment-related vocabulary. Our children are not limited by stereotypes and preconceptions. Our children have experienced a range of learning opportunities to practise and develop these skills and are able to self-direct their own research and ask and answer appropriate questions about their future and areas of interest. They are committed to their own development and see learning as a lifelong experience.

They are equipped with a diverse range of transferable Careers & Employability skills that are suitable for the current and evolving economic climate. Their developing skill-set will make them desirable to future employers and Higher Education institutions.

In order to achieve the vision, the purpose of the Careers & Employability curriculum is to:

  1. improve each child’s Careers & Employability Skills* and relate them to positive personal qualities.
  2. raise each child’s aspirations and broaden their horizons of what career and Higher Education pathways they know, think and feel is available to them by exposing them to frequent and diverse representative from different careers and Higher Education.
  3. equip each child with the knowledge, understanding and skills to make successful transitions to their next stage.
  4. develop their understanding of Health & Safety and encourage a better awareness of the relationship between risk and reward, risk calculation, and risk management.
  5. challenge all forms of stereotyping (by background, gender or diversity group) and preconceptions.
  6. dovetail with the future careers learning in secondary school and ensure the school meets and exceeds the statutory requirements set out by the Department of Education in their publication ‘Careers Guidance and Access for Education & Training Providers’ (January 2018) (pages 10-13)
